First day of the ski season

26th Oct 2012

Whilst some of us are getting excited about the snow due to fall tomorrow, builders in the valley have been working long days to get roofs on houses before the snow falls ...

It'll still be a bit before the Chamonix lifts open so today I headed to Saas Fee with Janine to get in some early season turns.  Janine is having some instruction to help her with the downhill aspect of "Skimo" racing.

Today we skied on our normal alpine kit to get a feel for our skis again and we spent some time fine tuning technique, interspersed with runs just "trying to go fast".  We'll be back there on Sunday to transfer the skills over on to our lightweight race kit.  Conditions on the glacier were good with the snow on the pistes being firm and grippy; ideal for the first turns of the season.

If you fancy a shot at this sport there will be a series of races in Scotland this coming season.  Conditions in Scotland look promising for the season ahead with the amount of snow that is falling at the moment.
