BASI Level 3 Mountain Safety Course

29th Nov 2013

Over the past 6 days I have been working for BASI in Zermatt delivering the Level 3 Mountain Safety course.  It has been very cold and windy all week, as it traditionally is in Zermatt at this time of year.  However the visibility was always good providing the groups with superb views of the Matterhorn.

The students have 4 days of training followed by 2 days of assessment.  The syllabus includes avalanche awareness, navigation, leadership and personal performance.  We were delighted that all 12 students passed.  This qualification allows them to teach off-piste within the ski area boundary.

Conditions in Zermatt are good but there isn't really a base for skiing off-piste.  However it is still getting well skied and compacted so after the next snow fall conditions should be excellent.
