Chamonix Guided Ski Days
In response to the question "What should we do on the free day (Wednesday) of "Ski Performance for Mountaineers" we have teamed up with High Mountain Guides who offer a day a guided day off piste skiing in and around Chamonix.
These guided ski days bring together like minded skiers within the Chamonix Valley for fun off piste skiing and great ski journeys away from the pistes & lifts. They are designed to give intermediate off-piste skiers the chance to explore interesting backcountry terrain with a Mountain Guide & enjoy a combination of good skiing, training & a fun day out in the mountains. If you have already experienced some off piste skiing and got a taste for more then this is a great opportunity to go further in to the backcountry under the guidance of an IFMGA Mountain & Ski Guide. These days are about great skiing, mountain training, including avalanche awareness & safe travel techniques, & meeting other like minded skiers in the Chamonix Valley. The day may involve a short walk (max half an hour) to access great off piste terrain. The emphasis will be on accessing interesting terrain & making off piste journeys rather than skiing anything steep or 'extreme'
Which of the many excellent off piste venues in Chamonix we choose to ski is decided by the Guide the evening before and is based upon the prevailing snow conditions, latest weather & snow / avalanche forecast and the information you provide about your experience & aims on the booking form.
High Mountain Guides also offer guided days on the Vallee Blanche.
To get the most out of these guided days you will be an intermediate off piste skier. If you are a complete beginner please first take some good quality off piste ski coaching. You will be able to ski pisted black runs with linked parallel turns in good control and have at least tried skiing in the 'side country' next to the pistes or other non groomed terrain. You do not have to be an expert and good fitness and enthusiasm to try will go a long way! There will be limited uphill during the day - often just a bit of walking carrying your skis or up to a maximum of half an hour uphill with skis on your pack. However a decent level of ski fitness is still required for the long vertical descents in variable snow conditions that are a feature of skiing in the Chamonix Valley!
If you are unsure of your ski / fitness levels and want to check before booking then please send an email detailing your relevant experience via our Contact page.
£130 per person (guiding fee only, see below)
1 - 6 people
High Mountain Guides will contact you the evening before to arrange a time & place to meet. It will usually be an 0830 meet at a cafe at one of the great resorts in the Chamonix Valley like the Grands Montets, Le Tour, Brevent / Flegere, Les Houches or even across on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif at Courmayeur.
If conditions are very snowy, with great powder but poor weather & a high avalanche risk we sometimes also ski a little further down the Arve Valley at the brilliant lower resorts like St. Gervais, Megeve or Combloux.
We will then ski for the morning using lifts or with short walks (max half an hour) to access great off piste terrain. We will usually have lunch in a cafe before venturing back out for an afternoon of more skiing & training. The emphasis will be on accessing interesting terrain & making off piste journeys rather than skiing anything steep or 'extreme'.
Additional costs not included in price
