Earn Your Turns
Off Piste Performance's 'Earn Your Turns' week has a simple aims. This is an early season ski touring week, where we choose the best possible venues for the prevailing conditions. We will balance individual aspirations with the search for the best ski touring available.
This week is about "earning our turns" and skinning away from the lifts to access good snow. Skiing in the mountains around Chamonix, we will select ski tours that can be accessed entirely by skinning. Early in the season good ski touring can often be found at medium altitudes, and in the alpine meadows. While riding the lifts isn't planned during this week, its quite possible that we will use the odd lift to for access if required.
This is an excellent opportunity to practice those hard won skills gained from Alison, and get some early season ski touring mileage prior to a longer tour. This course will appeal to those who have had some off piste instruction and now wish to put miles under their skis, both uphill and down. Earn Your Turns is an ideal progression from Ski Performance for Mountaineers and Chamonix Off Piste & Ski Mountain Skills.
Chamonix is one of the best ski touring centres in Europe. It's more than just a ski resort. The whole area is surrounded by excellent day tours which are often over shadowed by the high mountains. Not only are there good options in the valley but close by in the Aravis, Chablais, and also neighbouring areas in Italy and Switzerland.
This is a trip for those with prior off piste skiing and ski touring experience. You need to be competent, and reliable, skiing off-piste in all conditions on slopes up to 30 degrees. You should have done at least 10 days ski touring and be comfortable doing kick-turns when the conditions are favourable. You will have practiced regularly with your avalanche transceiver and be a competent member of a ski touring team. In the vast majority of cases we expect you to have had some coaching input to your skiing, and are now looking to consolidate those skills in the backcountry, both up and down. You will need fitness to be able to ski tour for five full days in the mountains and cope with approximately 1000m vertical per day at a rate of 300 metres per hour.
