Chamonix Weekend Ski Forecast

16th Dec 2011

This was the scene at Les Grands Montets today; all lifts shut and a category 5 avalanche risk.  When the avalanche risk is at it's highest it's a day to be staying away from the slopes.  Going to the climbing wall, the cinema, the swimming pool or the coffee shops are much safer alternatives.

The Chamonix weather forecast for tomorrow is marginally better, with the wind decreasing slightly and showers being less persistent.  It's still a case of wait and see ... there is a lot of unstable snow around and it may take a while to get the lifts in the Chamonix valley open.

With the snow / rain limit forecast to drop to 400m overnight if the ski lifts open tomorrow Les Houches should be a good safer option, with some shelter from the wind and the trees to give some definition if the visibility isn't great.

Rememeber to check the status of the lifts before you head out tomorrow.  You can also follow the avalanche forecast on Twitter from Chamonix's new Avalanche Academy.
