BASI Level 3 Mountain Safety

24th Mar 2013

March continues to be a month with very unsettled weather in Chamonix (and in the UK by all accounts!) resulting in some excellent powder days.

Last week I was working for BASI on the Level 3 Mountain Safety course.  This is a course that all instructors need to do as part of their Level 3 ISIA qualification.  It's a 6 day course; 4 days of training followed by a 2 day assessment.  This course was fantastic as with constantly changing conditions and category 4 avalanche risk on Tuesday there was plenty to show the students.  On Tuesday we found fantastic powder on the easy angled slopes off the west side of Le Prarion.

Sadly conditions had all changed by Saturday (my day off).  I needed to get in some uphill mileage in preparation for the Trofeo Mezzalama so headed up Mont Buet.  There was still plenty of untracked snow ... but it was all crust!

Today I was out teaching Zigi at Le Tour.  I sincerely hope I am still skiing like her when I am 71 ...
